Tesla has no salesmen

A car can be sold on a website. What's our excuse for "every customer is different"?

Tesla has no salesmen

Every business owner I know has said this sentence.

"My customers are all different. I can't productize."

During our webinar last night, King Quah, CEO of Saltycustoms answered this question by opening Tesla's website.

Literally, buying a Tesla is like buying an Apple MacBook. Pick the model. Pick the colour. Pick the interior. Tick the autopilot package. Add the accessories. Pay your deposit.

No salesperson. No "let me check with my manager". No three-day wait for a quotation.

And the customer still feels like they got a customized deal.

And they actually did!

It's hard to imagine, just a few years ago, if someone told you that you could buy a car off a website, you'd think they were crazy.

"Every customer is different" is the bottleneck

King was the bottleneck in his business for years. Anything above a certain amount needed his approval. He needs to make quotations. And he has to be the one closing the sale.

The way out isn't to work harder. It was to productize.

If what you sell needs heavy customization every time, it isn't a product yet. And you'll keep bottlenecking your business.

Here's the fix.

Take an A4 paper. Split it in half.

On one side, write what only you can do. On the other, what can be repeated.

The repeated side is what you turn into a menu, then build into systems, then hand over to your team, until they own it.

Productize your best seller first.
