Marketing is not the noblest profession

Marketing may not be the noblest profession, but when driven by genuine conviction, it becomes a powerful and ethical way to connect people with ideas, opportunities, and causes that matter.

Marketing is not the noblest profession

This thought enters my mind every time I hang out with doctors.

Marketing isn’t the noblest profession.

We’re not curing cancer. We’re not running into burning buildings. We’re… convincing people to buy things.

Marketing can make people buy something they wouldn’t have bought without marketing. Vote for someone they might not have considered. Join a cause that didn’t cross their minds.

Does that make marketing evil?

Honest thought: Some of it.

It’s evil to convince teenagers that vaping is cool. Or start a “movement” that celebrates obesity as healthy and acceptable.

Yesterday, I saw a large digital billboard advertising sugary drinks as something you need for a cool lifestyle.

But oh.. don’t throw marketing under the bus yet.

I didn’t feel guilty creating videos and advertising Underdog Con. In fact, I wish more people saw my ads. Because when it works, people walk away with ideas, business opportunities, and jobs.

Did I feel like a scam marketing data science courses? No. I saw working professionals finally take the plunge to upskill and find better-paying jobs.

Some people claim marketing makes people buy things they don’t need. But really, who gets to decide what someone needs?

  • Do you need to study locally?
  • Do you need an electric car?
  • Do you need a new phone?

People fail to realize that buying things can be one of life’s greatest pleasures. Remember how you felt when you drove your new car out the showroom?

Marketing may not be the noblest profession in the world.

But it’s not evil. At the same time, don’t mistake marketers for superhumans. They’re not some kind of special being, because they know how to sell.

We’re just mere humans, trying to do a necessary human job decently and with competence.

But you will 10X the effectiveness of your marketing if you 100% believe in whatever you’re selling.
