Stop hiding behind your laptop
Most people forget: the market is made of people. Here’s why meeting more of them might be the best marketing you’ll ever do.

People forget that the market is made of people. That means you have to go meet people.
I love this quote:
If they don’t know you, they cannot flow you.
Learn the skill to sell – online
Selling online, automatically (that’s what people are after) takes a different kind of skill. You’re using media (content, videos, copy) to convince and sell.
And when it works, you achieve scale very quickly.
I see E-Commerce as the practice of selling something online. Be it a product, a service, or even selling on a marketplace. I’ve gotten 5 experienced E-Com professionals to share their lessons.

“Get more people to know about your business…”
I started out as a music producer.
I had this imagination that all producers did was camp in their little studio, be creative, make music and live a good life (they actually do, minus the good life).
So after high school, I built a small studio and was officially open for business. I decided to charge RM60/hour for recording.
Immediately, I had a problem. Nobody knew me! So I wasn’t doing any recording.
Trying to make this work, I went on eBay and bought a book called, “Make Money With Your Studio” (I still have the book).

I read this line in the book:
The more people who know about your business, the more likely you are to succeed.
It goes on to say that potential business is everywhere:
- That old lady in line in front of you at the grocery store, just may have a granddaughter who is looking for a producer.
- The guy that sold you a car today, may know a band looking to record a CD.
- Your neighbour might work at the factory with an aspiring solo pianist who would like to record herself (but never knew there was a studio in town).
Ahh sh*t. I’m an introvert. That’s the reason I wanted to be a music producer anyway!
But I took the advice to heart, and started going out.
- I started going to local band performances.
- I ended up joining a networking group called Business Networking International (BNI)
- I visited music shops and asked if I could stick a poster on their wall.
It was uncomfortable, but it eventually worked. I was marketing myself.
Few years later, I found myself completing music for a History Channel documentary.
Somehow the more people I met, the more opportunities I got.
And that ties back to marketing. Marketing is about showing up in front of as many people as possible. Digital marketing just made it easier to achieve scale, but with the expense of losing some of that interpersonal touch.
Still, the key is this – the more people you meet, the more success you’d probably find.
