How to actually create FOMO
Most marketers fake urgency, and your customers can smell it. Here’s how to create real FOMO that actually works.

I’ve been thinking a lot about FOMO lately.
Fear Of Missing Out
Scarcity and urgency move people to make a decision. The problem is that typical marketers create artificial urgency.
“Only 5 spots left!”
Customers know that trick. You know when urgency is made up.
The right way to create urgency
Don’t do: There are 10 spots left. Only taking 5 calls this week. Hurry!
Do: Talk about how many people have already bought the product. Everyone over here already knows what we know. They already got the benefit of the product. You don’t.
To create FOMO, talk about how other people are buying your product, and it’ll make people feel like they’ve missed out.
Other people are doing this. You’re not doing this. They’re already in. You’re slow.
Example
When we organized Underdog Con, we created FOMO by talking about who’s coming to the conference. They’re already in. Are you still waiting?
