I spent the last two days at Svolution, a marketing conference in Bali. 

I was curious how the conference was able to drive 3,000+ people to the event. What attracted the audience? So whenever I met someone, I’d ask: “What brought you here?” 

8 out of 10 people gave me the same answer.

“I kept seeing the ads. First it was an event video, then it was ads promoting the speakers. And then I just joined.” 

These were Malaysians, Indonesians, Europeans. Most of them had to book a flight, hotel and go through all that trouble to attend the conference. 

Basically, they saw the ads over and over again – until they finally said, “sign me up”. 

And that’s why follow-ups are the holy grail.

It’s what most businesses are missing. It’s what’s missing in your marketing, if you’re not converting enough. 

In the West, people use email for follow-ups. In Asia, people prefer communicating over WhatsApp. Then of course, we have access to remarketing ads as well. 

I think we need to do all three. 

The typical customer has a lot of choices. The market is noisy. Customers don’t buy on the first contact point. You have to reach out again, again and again. 

In the words of Winston Churchill, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”
