Like most marketers, I began my career by trying to find out what's working in the market right now.
My discovery looked like this:
- Facebook group worked. Created more groups! This was in 2010 ish.
- SEO was everything. Used it to grow a music school to 400+ students under 6 months.
- Facebook ads. RM50 campaigns used to do the trick.
- Carousel ads. Remember when carousel ads were everything?
- YouTube ads. God, how many gurus promoting their courses did you watch?
- Long-form webinars. Used this to grow a data science school to millions in revenue.
- Virtual conferences. This was crazy effective when it was new.
- Five-day challenges. Fitness and funnel software businesses found lots of success in creating challenges.
- Facebook live selling. This was everything during COVID.
- Email newsletters. What made me start Daily CMO.
- and more...
There are probably another 100+ marketing strategies I've missed. But here's the point.
Markets constantly shift. New players, tools, and platforms disrupt the scene all the time.
A good marketer needs to have a good sense of what's working in the market. More importantly – good marketers stay in a niche and know what's working right now in their niche.
Because I'll tell you right now, marketing strategies that are successful for a men's shaver company might completely fall flat for secretarial firms.
The real question isn't "What's working in marketing right now?" but "What's working in marketing right now for my niche?"
