What I learned from China

That now fuels my mindset and strategy for marketing.

What I learned from China

About 2 weeks ago, I was in Shanghai.

People in China are relentless. Hard work and going all the way are embodied in their culture.

As I walked around the streets, I tried to observe their marketing.

Keep in mind, Shanghai is a city of about 29.5 million residents. Comparatively, we have about 30.9 million residents in the whole of Malaysia.

With that kind of population size, and the number of brands that's playing in the market, brands have to go all-out with their marketing if they want any chance of being noticed.

And they do.

LV went all out with a 30-meter-tall, ship-shaped store.

The Starbucks Reserve Roastery is one of the world's largest Starbucks (30,000 sq ft) with a 2-storey roastery inside.

I've never seen so many people in a Starbucks store

Stand out, or face obscurity.

When a brand promotes a new product, they take over entire buildings and streets to make a statement

The brands don't hold back. When they launch a campaign, they go all out to grab attention.

Now, take it to the common mindset we have here.

  • Umm, let's try an RM10 per day budget for ads. (Yes, these kinds of business people still exist)
  • Let's do one post on Instagram and see what happens.
  • Maybe I'll call one prospect today...

And then we act surprised when we don't get the results we want.

So here's what I learned.

It's hard to notice a tiny spark. But it's impossible to miss a raging inferno. Most businesses are out here making sparks – one post, small test ad, a single cold call. Then they act surprised when nobody noticed.

Stop making sparks. Burn the place down. Go all out.
