The world wants you to be vanilla.

Plain. Boring.

This is how it's always done. Don't break the rules. Don't try anything new or stupid. Follow the rules.

But looking back, any marketing success I've had came from doing something crazy or stupid.

I sent people cookies...

A few years back, I was promoting a course. But instead of allowing people to buy the course straightaway, we put up a waiting list.

You had to fill out a form.

Then the magic came.

I'd send a cookie to everyone who took the time to fill out the form.

The lead-to-conversion performance went through the roof. We converted over 60% of the people who filled out the forms.

Don't send cookies

At least not without proper packaging (my campaign was before COVID)

But the point isn't about sending cookies or sweets. It's a lesson in grabbing attention and surprising people.

In a world where everyone is zigging, choose to zag. Do your marketing in an extraordinary, out-of-this-world way.

To make good marketing, make something worth talking about.
