I was in Phuket for a getaway.
The problem? I bought the hotel stay through a credit card promotion.
The stay was cheap. Free breakfast. Access to tennis courts.
Only one caveat: I must go for a 2-hour timeshare sales presentation.
Why we hate sales
The salesperson greeted me with a 180% enthusiasm.
"How are you? Enjoying your stay?"
"Do you want coffee? Soda? Or... whiskey?"
They even had a children's playroom in their office, where my daughter lost herself for 2 hours.
Then I had to sit through 2 hours of pleasantries and sales talk. The salesperson started by asking how many holidays I take each year. Where my dream vacations are. Then she tabulated my holiday cost for the next 30 years.
It must have been 6-figures or so.
Then she showed me how much I would save with a timeshare plan. How "stupid" I am if I were to skip the offer.
Remember – we buy with emotions and justify with logic.
The presentation was trying to get me to buy something that I didn't need.
No wonder sales got a bad rep.
But, no business will survive without sales
No matter what you do, you have to sell. But you can do it ethically.
Chris Do, talks about reframing sales:
- From being self-centered --> Serve
- From giving advice --> Ask
- From talking --> Listening
- From ignoring complaints --> Emphatize
- From selling --> Summarize
When you sell correctly, it should feel like you're adding to someone's life. Not taking.
