Technology is going to play a very big role this year.
People are always surprised when I tell them we run Underdog conferences with just 2 people – myself & a full-time staff. Everyone else are partners, volunteer, or part-time staff. (We're lucky to have people to help us)
How is this possible?
A big part of it is thanks to systems. After running the event a few times, we began to see marketing processes that tend to be repeated, and we began building automations.
Some of our automations:
- People buy a ticket --> Get notified on Slack/Basecamp
- After buying a ticket --> Subscribe user to the newsletter
- Add users to the online community
- 1 day before --> Send out WhatsApp reminders
- 30-mins before conference ends --> Ask for feedback through WhatsApp
- Create a weekly to-do to record a thank you video with all the emails of those who bought
- Segment users based on the number of events they've attended
- etc.
We use a combination of Zapier and GHL, along with other tools like Google Sheets, MailerLite, and Ghost.
Honestly though? These are baby automations.
Yet, these simple workflows and automations save us hours every month. More importantly, they enable us to run these conferences without a big team.
