Go ahead. Ask anyone successful.

I'll bet the RM100 I have in my hand that their big breaks didn't come from what they knew.

But from who they met.

Personally, all the breaks I had in my career so far came from shaking the hands of someone I didn't know.

Some personal examples:

  • That one conference that I was reluctant to go? I met founder of Studio20 (and APW Bangsar), who led me to run a conference last year at APW Bangsar.
  • The one networking event in Jao Tim, I felt lazy to attend? I met founder of Mida, who sponsored one of my events and ran a workshop together with me.
  • A client introduced me to a random person looking for a marketing trainer, led me to fly to Brunei to run a 3-day marketing workshop – twice.

It's a lesson I keep learning over and over again.

And I'm sure if you reflected on your life, you'll agree with me – that it's really about who you know, not what you know.

Show up in rooms where you don't know anyone

In marketing, in business, and life – growth comes from friction.

From showing up in rooms where you don't know anyone (yet). From DM-ing that founder you admire. From attending the event, even when you feel like the most introverted person in the world. From having the curiosity to learn from what others have done.

And here’s the kicker:

Most of the time, the people you need to know won’t come to you.

You have to go to them.

Start reaching out. Reach up. Show up.

This is the growth hack.
