In 2023, I reluctantly went to a business event. I prefer working behind the computer anyway and didn't enjoy the smiles and handshakes.

Somehow, I went anyway, and as I expected, it turned out to be a boring event with four panelists exchanging fluff.

Sorry, but most panel discussion sessions are fluff.

I thought I'd had wasted my time and money, when a guy turned to me, shook my hand and said I looked familiar. His name was Donald.

After the event, I went home and cheekily emailed him – asking if he would sponsor my upcoming event, Underdog Ad Con. To my surprise, he said yes.

Wowsers!

Lesson #1: It never hurts to ask.

After the event, I pitched another project to Donald and didn't get much excitement from him. And so our conversation thread slowly died.

Fast forward a year later, I received an email from LiRou, who was part of Donald's team.

They were interested to run a workshop. I said yes. We started planning and marketing the workshop. A month later, we had 25 participants in a workshop.

Lesson #2: Focus on a long-term vision. Have patience.

But here's the bigger lesson.

Every opportunity you want, is in the hands of someone you've not met yet.

I met Donald as a total stranger. The decision to ignore my discomfort and show up at a business event I didn't feel like going, turned out to be a great, profitable decision.

So here's the low-down.

I believe that to grow your business, you've have to go shake hands with some great people. Underdog Sales Con is a great place for you to do that.
