Marketers need a growth mindset. Most marketing campaigns fail. But of course, people don’t tell you that.
Well, I’ll share an experience. I once ran an ad campaign to promote a fitness program for a personal training company in Penang. It was a half-day program valued at over RM500.
There were freebies, vouchers, and even free snack bars provided to participants. Was registration free? Just a small RM35.
We set up email autoresponders. Perfect landing pages. Created ads. Set up retargeting pixels. Launched. And then—crickets…
My ego was challenged. Not even a sale? I increased the ad budget and spent even more. No luck. The hole just got bigger.
After calming down, my growth mindset kicked in.
Okay, I’m going to dig in and find out what went wrong. So, I manually texted a few friends, shared the landing page and program, and asked if they wanted to join.
- Would you join? Why or why not?
- What would make it a no-brainer for you?
- Who is someone that would benefit from this?
It was an opportunity to learn.
There are 2 kinds of mindsets you can adopt.
Picture this: You’re enrolled in a class to learn a new language—Chinese (one of the hardest languages in the world!).
A few classes into the program, the instructor calls you to the front of the room and starts throwing questions at you, one after another.
Fixed mindset: Your ability is on the line. Can you feel everyone’s eyes on you? Can you imagine the instructor’s face, judging you? Feel the tension, feel your ego start to waver. What else are you feeling?
Growth mindset: Now you’re in a growth mindset. You’re a beginner. You’re here to learn. The instructor is a resource (and shortcut) to learn. Feel the tension leave your veins. Feel your mind opening up.
Mindsets are beliefs
The fixed mindset is about validating yourself – that you’re smart and talented.
The growth mindset is about stretching yourself to learn something new. Challenging yourself. Developing yourself.
