When I was 16, I became interested in music production and recording.
- How did they combine those sounds?
- Is that a real instrument?
All day I thought about these.
Then I started taking action.
I'd buy computer music magazines, go home, and try to squeeze out as much from them. Then I'll install some pirated programs on my computer – and try making some music.
I didn't get far.
8 months in and RM800 poorer (spent on magazines & pirate CDs), I didn't finish a single music track.
I decided to get help
After pestering my mom, I enrolled in a 1-to-1 class at a local recording studio.
The founder of the studio loaded a project on his computer and showed me how a music track was made. Get an Apple laptop, and forget Windows. Use this software. Here's what a music arrangement looks like. The bass usually follows the kick drums. Here's the difference between a rock and bossanova rhythm. You can start with a popular 4-chord progression.
In the next 3-4 months of taking lessons, I was producing decent music tracks. A year or two later, I found a stock music site, listed some of my music, and made some money.
Even the best performers have coaches
Knowledgeable coaches are worth spending money on.
They show me the shortest path between where I am to where I want to be.
Go back to when I'm 16 years old. What if I had kept trying to learn music production on my own?
- It would have taken me years to produce some decent music.
- I wouldn't have made money from my music.

I'm sure I'm smart enough to figure it out on my own. But, it would have taken me much longer.
