A messaging script that guarantees conversions

Have you tried asking your audience?

Few years ago, I joined a storytelling workshop hosted by Seth Godin and Bernadette Jiwa.

Hundreds of participants showed up online on a forum platform called Discourse to exchange ideas and help each other push through the 2-week workshop.

There were many spin-off discussions, and I was particularly interested in one of them on 'Email Newsletters'. One topic I remember actively discussing on was about what email to send to an email list.

Some recommended we send tips. Another one argued that we should send "principles". Another guy said we should send stories, since we're in a storytelling workshop.

This discussion went on for days. I would check in every few hours to see replies and debate.

Until finally one member said, "Umm, have you guys tried asking your audience what they want?"

Immediately, I felt stupid.

Here we were debating the type of content to send to an email list. But none of us thought about simply asking our audience!

I took the advice to heart and began doing it for the email list I was sending emails to. And it worked.
