It’s important to know the difference between being a freelancer and a business

A freelancer is not a small business.

Business owners build something bigger than themselves. They build a business, put in systems, and hire people to take care of the work – so they can work on the business, not in the business.

Does this mean it’s better to be a business owner? No! It means you have to be clear about what you want.

While it’s true many business owners started as freelancers, there’s a huge mindset shift needed to go from freelancer to business owners.

How to scale as a freelancer

A freelancer scales by finding better clients and increasing your price. You don’t need a 100 clients, you just need a handful of good clients.

Do the math

Let’s say your goal is to make an additional RM120,000 a year. Let’s break that down into how you can achieve it.

  • RM625 per month X 16 X 12 months
  • RM1,250 per month X 8 X 12 months
  • RM2,500 per month X 4 X 12 months
  • RM5000 per month X 2 clients X 12 months
  • RM10,000 per month X 1 client X 12 months

Oooh, feels more possible now, doesn’t it?

Bonus Lesson: How to Learn Effectively.

Borrowing the FAST framework by Jim Kwik, to help you learn more effectively, here’s how you can make the most out of Freelance Intensive.

F – Forget

Forget everything you think you know about freelancing. Your mind only works when it’s open to receive new ideas. Also, forget your limitations. There will be challenges through the course, that you might be resistant to doing. Forget your limitations, forget judging your capabilities and try them.

A – Action

Learning is NOT a spectator sport. You cannot become an F1 driver, just by watching F1 racing videos. Learning happens when you take action. As you go through the course, start applying the lessons in real life. If you can’t apply for them yet, take notes. The act of taking notes itself helps your mind solidify your learning.

S – State

Are you feeling energized right now? Or are you slumped in front of the TV? Your state is a snapshot of your mood, and to learn effectively – you need to be in a positive, energetic state. That’s why many people don’t remember what they learned in school. They were in a sleepy, uninterested, non-engaged state.

T – Teach

If you had to teach someone what you learned after finishing Freelance Intensive, you will learn it differently. You will pay closer attention. You will form better questions. It’s also why some schools make their students present after a lecture. Go through the course with an intention of teaching the content to someone else – your colleague, staff, friend, or family.

Your Turn

Create a topic and share if you want to be a freelancer or business owner. What is your goal and how will you get there?
